One of our caregivers has the wonderful pleasure of working with Martin, one of the kindest gentlemen we’ve ever met. Martin resides in a beautiful apartment in a senior community that has all the bells and whistles. He has a great sense of humor and his caregiver enjoys every minute with him.

A Working Man

Martin is in his late 80’s and although he has ambulatory issues and some serious health issues, his brain is still very sharp. He has been a hard-working man his entire life. This is ingrained in his everyday life, so much so that he still works on his computer for hours at a time. His caregiver even lovingly calls him “Boss.” She keeps his coffee filled while he scrolls on his computer. She eventually switches the coffee to juice or water so Martin doesn’t have too much caffeine, but he doesn’t mind. In fact, he doesn’t even seem to notice.

A Typical Day

A typical day with Martin starts out with his caregiver making him breakfast. While he eats, they plan the day – Martin loves a plan. The caregiver tidies up his kitchen and cleans out the fridge. Then, they sit and make a grocery list for the week. She changes his bed sheets and starts the laundry. She also makes sure the lights are on and the rooms are bright and cheery.

A Black Belt in Shopping

Martin has lost weight recently and was complaining that his jeans didn’t fit. He wanted to order pants but wasn’t sure what size he would be. His caregiver assured him that she has a black belt in shopping, so there was no need to order. This made Martin laugh and he agreed to have her shop for him. His caregiver knew the perfect spot to go – COSTCO (after all, they do have everything)! She picked up two different sizes of jeans. Martin tried them on and found the perfect size. His caregiver returned the other pair and picked up a second pair of the correct size. New jeans accomplished – problem solved!

Organizing and Running Errands for Seniors

Grocery shopping, CVS, and other errands are all completed before Martin’s caregiver leaves for the day. She fills his refrigerator with good food so he is set for the week. His clothes are cleaned, folded, and put away. Martin and his caregiver have become friends and always enjoy their time together. She takes care of him like she would her own father.
